The recent heavy rains causing a surge in the Yamuna river s water level have touched the walls of the Taj Mahal, submerging a garden, which is unseen for 45 years. But the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) reassured that other historical monuments had not suffered damage, attributed to the Taj Mahal s ingenious design that ensures water does not enter the main structure.
Yamuna reaches Taj Mahal: ASI has said that there is no threat to the heritage site even though the outer parts of Itimad-ud-Daula’s tomb and the Dussehra Ghat near the Taj Mahal have been inundated.
The iconic Taj Mahal in Agra also faced the brunt as water entered its walls and submerged a garden behind the monument. This is the first time in 45 years that the water reached Taj Mahal walls as water level in the river reached 497.9 feet. The last time Taj Mahal was affected by floods was in 1978 when the water level in the Yamuna soared up to 508 ft., India News, Times Now
