Former industry minister Hiroshige Seko told the Taiwanese leader Japan's stronger stance "will work as a clear and strong deterrent" against attempts to "change the status quo by force."
LDP policy chief Koichi Hagiuda said in Taiwan that China's massive increase in military spending and the North Korean threat are why Japan needs to raise its defense budget.
Meeting in Taipei, President Tsai Ing-wen thanked Koichi Hagiuda, the LDP's policy chief, for Japan's support over issues like maintaining security in the sensitive Taiwan Strait.
In the revised National Security Strategy, Tokyo will also mention that "no unilateral change of the status quo by force will be tolerated" regarding Taiwan.
