During the stopover on her way to Central America, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen hailed the relations between both the states. While speaking at event in New York, Tsai said that the relationship between Washington and Taipei was “closer than ever”
China on Wednesday vowed retaliation should the Taiwanese leader Tsai Ing-wen meet the U.S. House speaker during a trip to the United States.

The Honduran foreign minister travelled to China this week to open relations after President Xiomara Castro said her government would start ties with Beijing, Honduras being one of only 14 countries to formally recognise Taiwan.
Taiwan’s Former President Ma Ying-jeou will visit China later this month, said his office on Sunday (March 19). The move will mark the first time that a former or current Taiwanese leader has visited since the defeated Republic of China government fled to the island in 1949. Notably, the Republic of China remains Taiwan’s official name.
