When Mayor Tamara Wallace looks out her office window from her perch within the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church, she’s afforded a bird’s-eye view of the traffic along Route 50, which has been pretty thick since the pandemic began in March.
And if she’s at her aerie before 2 p.m., there’s no denying the foot traffic going in and out of the Red Hut Breakfast Cafe, which sits adjacent to the church’s parking lot. The owners Wallace’s longtime South Lake Tahoe neighbors have refused to close down their restaurant to indoor dining, despite state and local public health orders, which forbid indoor dining as coronavirus caseloads surge and regional ICU beds fill.

With only hours remaining on the state s three-week shutdown order for the Greater Sacramento region, officials across Lake Tahoe say they haven t heard from the state about a course of action to potentially loosen restrictions on local businesses, hotels and restaurants and reopen the region to travelers.
Featuring some of the biggest names in skiing and snowboarding, the inaugural Tahoe Backcountry Awareness Week will culminate with the Athlete Summit on Thursday, December 17. The free virtual event, designed to encourage those planning to venture into the backcountry to educate themselves before doing so, will take place from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with a live Q&A period with Michelle Parker, Jeremy Jones, Elyse Saugstad, Cody Townsend and Amie Engerbretson.
The week-long educational series introduced attendees to topics including avalanche safety equipment, backcountry etiquette, what training is needed, where to get trained, and motorized backcountry tips and safety. Local guides and outfitters will also have special offers available to attendees, such as coupon codes for AIARE course sign-ups and free airbag testing. Videos have been released each morning at 7:00 a.m. on takecaretahoe.org and will remain available for the duration of the winter.
