STATELINE Nev. Construction on the more than $80 million Tahoe South Events Center will resume next week.
Excavation, concrete and foundation work will begin on Monday, May 3. The project broke ground in July 2020 at Montbleu Resort Casino & Spa, along U.S. Highway 50.
The new center will provide a venue for conventions, special events and entertainment, as well as a variety of events for the South Tahoe community, including concerts and family programming, as well as professional and amateur sporting events.
The events center is expected to host up to 130 events a year with opportunities to expand visitation into shoulder seasons and mid-week periods. The anticipated economic impact to the entire community is estimated to be $40-60 million per year, said a press release from the Tahoe Douglas Visitor Authority.

STATELINE, Nev. - Earlier this week the Incline Village Crystal Bay Visitor Bureau (IVCBVB) announced they were canceling its 4th of July fireworks display for the second consecutive year due to ongoing pandemic concerns and heightened summer visitation concerns.
“The COVID-19 impacts on the health and safety of our visitors and residents alike continue to create uncertainty in the planning and execution of this traditional vent,” said Andy Chapman, president and CEO of IVCBVB. “With our experience of high visitation in the Tahoe Basin last summer, the Coalition thought it prudent to take a step back to look at the event’s effect on our region as a whole.”
STATELINE, Nev. While a redevelopment agency approved to help fund a Stateline event center will disappear as of Jan. 1, its $1.3 million ghost will continue to haunt Douglas County.
Voters decided to eliminate the district after a petition placed an initiative on the ballot.
Slightly a week after the petition was certified, county commissioners approved a contract with the Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority providing $34.25 million to build the center.
At their Dec. 17 meeting, county commissioners were told that bonds have been sold as a result of the action and preliminary construction has begun.
“From a legal standpoint, legislative action generally cannot impair a pre-existing contractual obligation,” Deputy District Attorney Zach Wadlé said. “But at the same time, no other redevelopment area and no tax increment can be collected beyond what’s required.”
