Calls grow for parliamentary restoration of HEC autonomy A decision by the Pakistan government to revoke the autonomy of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) is being met with increasing resistance from politicians, academics and civil society. Activists and Pakistan’s main opposition political parties teamed up against the presidential ordinance on 8 April, which placed the higher education regulatory body under the federal education ministry, calling for parliamentary scrutiny of the decision. HEC Chairperson Tariq Banuri was also removed in the middle of his four-year term. More than 150 academics, politicians and civil society representatives wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan on 26 April calling on him to withdraw the ordinance and restore HEC autonomy.
