NON-FICTION: THE JOURNALISM WE LOST | Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF)

For those interested in Pakistani politics and journalism, Pakistan Mein Sahafat Ki Mutabadil Tareekh [An Alternative History of Pakistani Journalism] is not an ordinary book. It has been produced by the Society for Alternative Media and Research (SAMAR) led by Mazhar Arif, a renowned advocate for public interest media; and authored by Dr Tauseef Ahmed Khan, an equally prominent academic and journalism educationist. The book is not a reproduction of facts alone, but goes beyond the remit of the usual chronological compilations, by juxtaposing Pakistan’s political and socio-economic contexts against the evolutionary trajectory of journalism. This adds a three-dimensional depth for anyone seeking to understand Pakistan’s chequered history of journalism and its impact on shaping the national political psyche. In this sense, the book fills a key gap in the available literature on public interest journalism’s attempt to impact national politics in the country’s formative decades

'It makes me want to cry': Covid rise stirs bad memories in Newham

Last modified on Tue 15 Dec 2020 04.15 EST The sharp increase of coronavirus cases in the east London borough of Newham, which recorded the worst mortality rate in England and Wales in May, has left residents with a terrible sense of deja vu. Cases were levelling off before England went into national lockdown and the council had hoped they would soon start to fall, but there was a sharp rise instead. The borough recorded 307 cases per 100,000 people for the most recent week of complete data. “It makes me want to cry,” said 72-year-old Viv Archer, manager of Newham Bookshop, who was particularly frustrated by residents not wearing masks and socially distancing. “I just think people don’t think they’re affected.”
