Vaccination sites closed for upcoming storms

1 min read Mississippi State Department of Health officials announced on Tuesday that all drive-thru vaccination sites in the state will be closed on Wednesday due to forecasted storms, resulting in thousands of appointments being rescheduled.  Strong storms are expected to move into the northeast Mississippi area to continue through late Wednesday night. Most of the northeast Mississippi area is at a moderate risk level, also known as a level 4 out of 5. The most severe part of the storm is expected in Oxford around Wednesday afternoon.  The main threats of the storm include tornadoes, significant damaging winds and large hail, according to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center. 

University still only allows employees to receive vaccine on campus

3 min read At approximately 12:30 p.m. today, University of Mississippi pharmacy students and doctors officially began administering the COVID-19 vaccine in the Tad C. Smith Coliseum. The first person to receive a dose was senior biology major Brianna Chambers. The university began distributing Pfizer vaccines today at the Tad C. Smith Coliseum, and senior biology major Brianna Chambers was the first person to receive a dose on campus. Photo by Katherine Butler. Chambers is a certified EMT, so she has been eligible to receive the vaccine since the first doses were administered in January. For the past two months, though, she has been waiting to make an appointment because she felt like other people should have the opportunity to be vaccinated before her. 

University to begin administering vaccines on Friday

3 min read Vaccines will be available on campus beginning Friday, March 12, to people who work on campus, according to an email from Provost Noel Wilkin. Currently, only the Pfizer vaccine is available and only those who meet Mississippi State Department of Health guidelines on who can receive the vaccine will be eligible to be vaccinated on campus. On-campus vaccinations are only available to people who work at the university at this time, including student workers and those who work in Aramark locations on campus.  The Tad C. Smith Coliseum has been prepared to receive shipments of the coronavirus vaccine for weeks, and vaccine administration will begin on campus on Friday, March 12. File photo by Katherine Butler.
