(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – The Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC), has enjoined mobile phone network subscribers in the country to embrace the ongoing National Identity Number NIN sim data linkage exercise, saying it will improve national security.
Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, (EVC) Professor Umar Garba Danbatta, who stated this while addressing consumers at the NCC special day at 32nd Enugu international Trade Fair, in Enugu emphasised the importance of the ongoing (NIN) exercise, saying “it will ensure credible citizen database for improved national security.
He stressed the need for consumers to be cyber security-conscious while online and to always ensure efficient management of e-waste for a safer environment, noting that this year’s World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD), which was observed on March 15, 2021 focused on ‘Tackling Plastic Pollution’ in line with the e-Waste Regulation being pursued by the Commission.

IN commemoration of World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) 2021, the Consumer Affairs Division of the Ministry of Trade and Industry hosted a poster competition in March for students 12-17 years.
The competition challenged participants to creatively depict how they can tackle plastic pollution based on the WCRD 2021 theme Tackling Plastic Pollution, said a media release from the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
Director consumer guidance and protection Claudette Jordan-John presents second-place winner Tahlia Peters, a form three student of St Madeleine Secondary School, with her prize.
65 member organisations from over 50 countries ran innovative and path-breaking campaigns helping consumers to rethink, refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, repair and replace plastic products in their everyday lives. 19 members held educational workshops with consumers and many more involved consumers directly in practical activities.
Why shout about plastic pollution?
Plastic is an incredibly adaptable and useful material. But the global production and consumption of plastics is now completely unsustainable, and shows no sign of slowing down.
The Pew Charitable Trusts & SYSTEMIQ report last year, Breaking the Plastic Wave, calculates that the flow of plastics into the ocean will triple by 2040 if we continue with business as usual. Since plastic is made from fossil fuel, by this date the industry will use up 19% of the planet’s total carbon budget.
