Minister for Economic Affairs and Communications Riina Sikkut (SDE) should have stood up for Estonia's interests more than she did in relation to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) supplies, Sikkut's predecessor in the post, Taavi Aas (Center) says.
Two bills aimed at reforming the electricity market passed their first Riigikogu reading Wednesday evening in a special session convened for the purpose. The bills, should they enter law, have both the long-term goal of moving towards renewables electricity only, and aim to resolve the immediate issue of soaring electricity prices, by providing a universal, guaranteed service.
The Center Party reelected incumbent Jüri Ratas as party chairman at the 19th party congress held in Tartu on Saturday, defeating challenger and Tartu chapter chair Jaan Toots 470 votes to 201.
Opposition Center Party MP Taavi Aas says that a proposed universal electricity service, which would cap prices for consumers in response to record-breaking rates in recent months, could be set at an even lower price.
