ILOILO CITY – Ninety-eight former New People’s Army (NPA) rebels have pledged allegiance to the government in Panay Island and Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police Gen. Debold Sinas has urged them to support the national government’s fight against communist insurgency.

Sinas told them during their pledge of allegiance ceremony in Oton, Iloilo that the government is “always ready to accept and help them even though they once committed a mistake to the government.” They are the latest to withdraw support from the Communist Party of the Philippines and took their oath of allegiance before the Western Visayas Regional Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (Western Visayas RTF-ELCAC).

“We, lawyers, only perform the duties we sworn to do and seek to uphold the rule of law regardless who we represent. We are not cowered by a series of attacks against members of the bench and the bar. But we denounce the formative culture of subjecting lawyers to attack for enforcing the rights of the people,” said Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP-Iloilo Chapter) in a statement released Thursday, March 4. “We are one with the people of Tapaz in condemning the cruelty of the CPP-NPA Terrorist against the active public servant and peace advocate in the town, Vinoya said in a press release from the 3ID’s Public Affairs Office.
