viewers joining us here in the united states and all around the world. you are watching cnn newsroom, and i m rosemary church. we are following developments out of ukraine where explosions continue to be heard in central kyiv. the first blast came just hours ago, and one official says russia is now attacking the capital with kamikaze drones. cnn s chief international correspondent clarissa ward joins me now from central kyiv. what is the latest on this? reporter: so, essentially, rosemary, people here woke up to the sound of air-raid sirens followed by two loud explosions. then there were at least another two explosions, and we re right in the center of the city at the location or right next to the location of the impact of one of those blasts. you can probably see behind me there s still a lot of smoke in the air from that explosion. we don t know yet how many people may have been injured or possibly killed in this series of blasts here in the capital. we did speak to th
horrendous shootings happening and party like atmospheres but everything turning wrong within just a few seconds. as a busy saturday night in philly, hundreds of people out on the streets according to investigators. it all ended up as one of the countries latest mass shooting spree take a look on your screen this is where it all happen in phillies at south south street neighborhood just last night. south street had dozens of bars and lots of restaurants. it s a pretty popular to hang out pretty special in the summer. police say it was slammed last night to put investigators telling us at least 14 people were shot, three of those people were killed. just before midnight investigators spotted a multiple gunman opening fire into that large crowd, that is when a philly police officer pulled out his gun and tried to take down one of the shooters. this normally busy strip now a crime scene. there are at least two guns that have been recovered from the scene. one with an extende
attacks in northern kherson over the weekend. i expect that will continue. and the rugs at the moment have really lost the initiatives and momentum. they can only respond to what ukrainians are doing, too. sqand in the wake of the belarusan president announcing a russian regional group of troops we re now seeing increased fears of a deepening military cooperation between these two allies. how might this change the direction of the war, do you think? it changes significantly from the floor of the inflation it s been giving the russians lots of ammunition particularly artillery ammunition, and they ve just provided them with dozens of t72 tanks. it s unlikely in the short or
javelin aiming it into the dance. that s kind of thing they will be doing quite a bit of especially if they don t get the t72 tanks they are asking for on the ukrainian side. this new commander over on the russian side, we have watched weeks of the atrocities it s hard to believe it could get worse. it is hard to believe. there are different degrees of terrible. this man, he s about 60 years old, as it says here. he s the commander of russia s southern military district which means he may have already had a hand in what happened in bucha. that s the district that borders on ukraine and his previous experience as the butcher in syria, that speaks a lot to what happened in aleppo.
intelligence that s beenoge gon, let s be frank, that will give the ukrainians great advantage to take the fight to the russians and to really completely wrest the initiative away from the russians and set the tone of the engagement. the donbas is much different geographically than the area north and west of kyiv with more open landscapes. who has the edge in that kind of territory, general? well, the russians have the tanks and they have the numbers. this is classic tank battle. kharkiv was one of the most fought over cities in world war ii when the nazis were coming in and the russians were coming through in world war ii. however, the ukrainians this is their home turf, so it s a home game for them. they ve got familiarity with what this terrain provides in terms of advantages to them. so if the ukrainians can bring forward tanks that they have, the t72 tanks, many they ve
