Never waste a good crisis

Every politician now knows the famous advice of then-Congressman Rahm Emanuel: “Never allow a good crisis go to waste. It’s an opportunity to do the things you once thought were impossible.” It may be a sad commentary on the state of modern politics, but tactically shrewd. In fact, it works for both sides, whether the “crisis” is real, perceived, or created out of whole cloth. Given any “urgent” problem, leaders will agree to policies they once opposed. During his first week, President Biden endorsed the latest environmental fad, a goal to conserve 30 percent of the land in the U.S. by 2030, known as “30-by-30.” It responds to a created crisis, because far more than 30 percent of America is already open space, open lands, and unoccupied territory. In the West, most of the land is permanently “protected” by federal ownership (nearly 40 percent of Colorado), so the evils of development will never be visited upon millions of acres
