New Study Shows Islamist Violence Remains Top Terror Threat

The New York Review of Books recently devoted a lot of space to a review of “The Sword and the. The Sydney, Australia-based Institute for Economics & Peace compiles the annual GTI report based on data from the Global Terrorism Database (GTD) and other sources. The GTD includes more than 170,000 terrorist incidents from 1970-2019. The recent GTI report finds that among the 13,826 terrorism-related fatalities last year, far-right groups including white supremacists and neo-Nazis killed 89 people. A lone gunman attack on two mosques in New Zealand caused 51 of those deaths. In addition, unaffiliated people are the primary perpetrators of right-wing extremist attacks not terrorist groups which tend to be deadlier and more organized. Almost 60% of right-wing terrorist attacks since 1970 were perpetrated by people unaffiliated with any organization or network, whereas more than 90% of Islamist attacks involve assailants who are affiliated or part of formal terrorist organization

Russian aid entities have conducted at least 1,063 missions to 351 communities in Syria in this time. Previous research on Russia’s shallow and symbolic use of humanitarian aid in Syria has often focused on Russia’s Center for Reconciliation and Conflicting Sides (CRCS). Less explored are the twenty-five other Russian entities that have reported delivering aid in the country at one point or another since Russia intervened in the Syrian conflict in late 2015 (Figure 1 and 2). By forming a shadow aid system in the country, this seemingly innocuous ecosystem poses an underestimated threat to the humanitarian community and the Syrian people.
