For 20 years, the Syracuse Poster Project has brought art and poetry to the city each spring, an expression of hope for what is to come for the city.
After a year of uncertainty, the 16 posters revolving around downtown expressing the past and future mean even more.
The Syracuse Poster Project unveiled its winners for 2021 in late April with a virtual showcase the highlighted the poets and artists.
The project originated in 2001 as a way to merge two existing initiatives: The Syracuse New Times Syr-Haiku Contest and Syracuse University’s Illustration program. The project’s co-founder and current coordinator, Jim Emmons, noticed that kiosks lining the city streets for advertising purposes were underused, and he pitched his idea for the Poster Project to the Downtown Committee. It has been a beloved public art display ever since.
