Symphony Australia collection
During the Australian Broadcasting Corporation s (ABC) extensive years of commitment to developing orchestral life in Australia, the national broadcaster had a secondary role of facilitating the composition, performance and broadcast of works by Australian composers. The ABC s Federal Music Library preserved many of the musical scores and parts arising from the ABC s function as Australia s premier classical music performing organisation in the days when archiving Australia s musical history was not a significant consideration for any national institution. This resulted in a collection of Australian musical works, dating from 1912 through to the 1970s.
The National Library of Australia acquired this collection, known as the Symphony Australia Collection in 2000, from the Symphony Australia Library, formerly the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Federal Music Library (ABC Federal Music Library).

A small but striking sculpture on display in the Special Collections Reading Room symbolically invites you to discover the National Library’s extensive Music Collection. This year’s Friends Creative Arts Fellow David Wickham will explore and share with us the works of composer Frederick Septimus Kelly but there is much more to be found.

Open Book shows a conductor, arms outstretched with a baton in his hand. Gifted to the Library in memory of English-born Australian composer Peter Tahourdin (1928-2009), the work is by Dutch artist Wiea Duintjer (b. 1951).

Youth symphony opens popular adult music appreciation webinars to general public
The Norwalk Youth Symphony (NYS), which serves the Fairfield and Westchester regions, is opening its Adult Music Appreciation program to the general public. These weekly webinars, led by NYS conductors, discuss significant composers and focus on some of the most important works in the classical music canon, all underscored with excerpts from the music.
The course schedules include discussions of Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony and Beethoven’s Ninth, along with broader themes such as Leonard Bernstein’s role in shaping American music, and how music functions as an “unseen hero” in great films.
