India s main opposition leader Rahul Gandhi warned on Friday that unless the deadly second COVID-19 wave sweeping the country was brought under control it would devastate India as well as threaten the rest of the world.
In a letter, Gandhi implored Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prepare for another national lockdown, accelerate a countrywide vaccination programme and scientifically track the virus and its mutations.
Gandhi said the world s second-most populous nation had a responsibility in a globalised and interconnected world to stop the explosive growth of COVID-19 within its borders.

Hospitals have recorded a three-fold rise in demand for medical oxygen
With a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases in the State, the demand for medical oxygen has in the last few days shot up three-fold than the usual 200 metric tonnes required per day. Most hospitals, especially medium and smaller hospitals, said they are running out of stocks.
The situation took a turn for the worse since Friday with some smaller hospitals asking families to shift patients admitted in their hospitals to other facilities as they would touch the zero mark anytime.

BENGALURU : With Covid cases continuing to rise in Bengaluru, more and more patients are finding themselves in need of oxygen, leading to a significant increase in demand.
The impact of this is being felt by NGOs that deliver oxygen cylinders for free, private oxygen banks and hospitals.
One such NGO is the Crisis Management India, which rents oxygen cylinders from private centres in the city and gives it for free to those who are unable to afford it.
Its founder-member Afsar Ahmed said that they get at least two to three phone calls a day, requesting for oxygen cylinders.
