Local student wins regional Optimist essay contest April 25, 2021 4:03 PM PT Print An essay written by Sydney Mafong, a student at Pacific Trails Middle School, has been selected as the California South Optimist District’s Essay Contest $2,500 scholarship winner. Her submittal was also forwarded to Optimist International as the district’s entry into the International Essay Contest competition. Earlier this year Sydney won the Del Mar-Solana Beach Optimist Club’s annual Essay Scholarship Contest based on a theme of “Reaching your Dreams by Choosing Optimism”. Optimist Club announces winners of Essay Scholarship Contest March 12, 2021 3:26 PM PT First place winner Sydney Mafong (Courtesy) A panel of three judges evaluated the local students’ essays using strict Optimist International rules to determine the winners. First, second, and third place winners will present their papers at a club meeting after COVID-19 pandemic-related restrictions allow. First place went to Sydney Mafong, a student at Pacific Trails Middle School. Sydney was awarded a check for $250, gold medallion, and certificate.
