Full-time in-person school is coming back Wednesday for South County families for the first time since the pandemic began.
On Wednesday Chula Vista Elementary and Sweetwater Union High will start the new school year. South County districts traditionally start the school year earlier than other local districts.
California’s waiver that allowed school districts to do distance learning has expired, so schools are required to provide full-time in-person instruction this new school year, although families can still choose independent or online learning.
Many South County students will be returning in-person this week. Although most South County districts reopened last spring at least part time for students, South County school districts were among the last to reopen last school year, partly due to previously high COVID rates in South County.
Hundreds of thousands of California students this spring will not be taking the state’s annual Smarter Balanced standardized tests, an EdSource survey of the state’s largest districts shows.
The Smarter Balanced tests are aligned with the Common Core state standards for English language arts and math and are required by state and federal law each spring. Federal education officials in February told states that they must measure student progress this year, after waiving testing requirements in spring 2020 when Covid-19 caused school closures across the country.
Now, as California lags behind many states in reopening schools for in-person instruction, school districts are moving ahead with a wide range of plans to measure academic progress during the pandemic.
