president any political capital, it won t boost his sagging approval ratings or help the democrats in the midterms. in other words, there s really no political margin in it for this president. but this is one of those case where is we get to see the progressive president barack obama shining through. joining me this morning daf that linser, managing editor for msn msnbc.com and the reporter who broke this story about aaron s botched commutation case in 2012. with her are anthea butler from the university of pennsylvania, ovik roy, senior fellow at the manhattan institute, and lisa cook, economic professor at michigan state university. thanks for coming in. you really did break this story and have been all over this story. walk us through how clarence aaron s case came up again and how this happened. sure. i love the way you introduced him because he was a wonderful case regardless. his sentence was so shocking to so many people when it happened, and this was at the height of the drug
i think again the question is how do you offset that with other savings. this new budget agreement doesn t do a lot to bring down the debt like people hoped for a bigger deal. i think republicans will have to push back on any kind of thing that adds new spending. so i think there is some likelihood it could happen because there s a lot of places in the country where people are still hurting and there s going to be pressure on congress to do this. there are signals some might join with democrats to push something forward. the white house is going to make this along winning harry reid in the senate their number one priority when the they get back. daf, listen to one of the questions the president was asked. when you look back at this year, very little of the domestic agenda you outlined in your state of the union. health care rollout obviously had huge problems and your ratings from the public are near historic lows for you. when you take this all together has this been the worst yea
millions of people who didn t have health care, younger people, people with young children with pre-existing conditions. there are people hold have been thrown off their health care because of caps, lifetime caps who are seriously ill, who can t be thrown off. insurance companies can t spend vast sums of money on bonuses and administrative fees. if they do, they have to give money back. all of these things are already in place and this what the republican party wants to roll back. they apparently thought the old system taken away. i think, julie, dav joy, daf brought this it, it s around insurance instead of care. the crassness, lets continue to allow insurers to offer substandard plans that could bankrupt them, leave them with massive bills is morally bankrupt. if i worked for the
i have one. tom udall in new mexico has another one. we need a constitutional amendment to overturn citizens united. that will take us a while. we have to get through the house, the senate, three-quarters of the states. but i think short term what we can do is pass some legislation, which can significantly diminish the impact of citizens united. for example, right now, somebody is a billionaire corporate leader. he could put as much money as he wants into a campaign. he can put ads on television, come up with some phoney front group. nobody knows who s paying for the ad. you-f you do something very simple and you say that that ceo has got to have his picture on that ad saying that i, the head daf the ceo of this or that corporation, i approve this ad, just as any politician has to do, that in itself would go a long way to diminish these ads because they don t want to be on tv, showing the american
