B.C. didn t effectively manage conservation lands program: auditor general People enjoy the natural beauty and ecosystem of Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary during a nature walk in Victoria, B.C., on Tuesday, September 3, 2019. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Chad Hipolito May 11, 2021 - 4:27 PM VICTORIA - British Columbia failed to adequately manage a conservation lands program aimed at protecting habitats for fish and wildlife species that are some of the most diverse in Canada, the auditor general says. Michael Pickup said Tuesday the program conserves biologically productive estuaries and grasslands in B.C., as well as wildlife management areas including internationally recognized wetlands and important migratory bird habitat.

Split-rail fence protecting sensitive area destroyed on Christmas Hill

Cara Gibson, the sanctuary’s executive director, said about 200 feet of split-rail fencing, which had been held together by foot-long spikes, was pried apart and tossed around the area. The wooden rails were thrown over the side of the hill and down an embankment. Along the fence were signs pointing out it was there so the ecosystem could be restored. “There are sensitive species at the top of Christmas Hill and we are trying to prevent trampling,” said Gibson. “We are a non-profit and a lot of the materials we use come from community donations, and so it feels sort of devastating to see such goodwill and wonderful work to support the environment just ripped apart for no really obvious reason.”
