halted and casinos in the area were ordered to close. officials in the southeast are warning that the worst of florence is far from over as water levels continue to rise. let s turn to nbc meteorologist bill karins. it s going to take a while. there was so much water. it just takes a long time for it to gather and head to the big rivers and head out to sea. most of the damage has been done with this storm. i d say maybe 90-95%. there are still areas that will see new flooding concerns and new flash flooding too. here s how it went in north carolina. swa swansboro had almost three feet. we set rainfall records for
not locally, for the entire state for any tropical system was 24 inches, back with floyd, that was back in 1999. we have now picked up over 30 inches of rain with florence, and the thing you have to understand, yes, we have broken the record, but it is still raining. that number will likely go up and that spread from the previous record is likely to get bigger. that record was set in swa swansboro. there s more on the way. take a look at this. still to come, widespread amounts of 6 to 12 inches, but it is not out of the question for some locations where you re getting training of big downpours to still pick up an additional foot of rain. this is on top of what they ve already had. i want you to understand, this is not totals, this is additional rain on top of what
of north carolina but now pushing inland and also adding states like virginia and even south carolina to that list as well of where we are going to see that rain. we do still have some very heavy rain bands across portions just north of wilmington and to the south of wilmington. those rainfall rates are two to three inches an hour. you have to remember, you have to add that on top of what has already fallen. and we ve had some very impressive amounts. elizabethstown, 20 inches. emerald isle and morehead city, both nearly two feet of rain. swa swansboro has picked up 30 1/2 inches. the key factor for a lot of these cities is it s still raining, they could pick up an additional six, eight, or ten inches of rain on top of what they ve already had. the biggest difference is that that rain is pushing further inland. so cities like charlotte and raleigh are going to start to see some of those heavier bands
