Correspondent CANFIELD – When asked what it felt like to use a wide, two-person crosscut saw to slice off a piece of a thick log, Vincent Desanto cut to the heart of the matter. “It was an exercise in connecting us all together,” explained Vincent, 17, a member of Ellsworth-based Boy Scout Troop 9071, who stressed the importance of teamwork and others’ support in completing the laborious task. Vincent, who has been in Scouting about five years, was on one end of the saw with teeth arranged in an alternating pattern, and fellow Troop 9071 member P.J. Beres was on the other. P.J., 15, has spent about four years as a Scout, he said.

Scouts visit area museum | News, Sports, Jobs

HOWLAND The boys and girls of Canfield’s Troop 25 recently gathered at the Medici Museum of Art to learn about Scouting heritage through the eyes of famed artist Norman Rockwell. The Scouts out of Canfield United Methodist Church were guided by Howland attorney Ned Gold, who was central to the three-year effort to bring the Rockwell paintings to the museum. The 65 paintings are part of the art collection owned by the Boy Scouts of America. “Mr. Gold is a treasure to the museum itself,” said Suzanne Heino, Scoutmaster of Troop 8025. Sharing stories from a lifetime of Scouting, Gold added context to the paintings from his many experiences at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and the 2019 World Jamboree held in West Virginia at Summit Bechtel Reserve.
