Being first in his class, pulling straight As, and making a scientific presentation to Gov. Charlie Baker wasn’t enough for Westfield High School senior Suvin Sundararajan. Now he’s being recognized nationally for his work with polylactide filaments.
The 17-year-old has done breakthrough research to create flame retardant filaments 3D printers can use to make everything from aerospace parts to commercial and residential building materials. It’s a problem the industry has been facing but has not solved. Sundararajan tackled the challenge while serving an internship in the University of Massachusetts’ Polymer Department.
