And that story is the rise of the sudden and spectacular rise of midtown manhattan in the 1920s. Which was an urban backwater before 1919. There wasnt a single skyscraper above 42nd street. And by the end of the decade, by the end of the 1920s, almost half of new york skyscrapers were in midtown.
