League of Women Voters pays tribute to Carol Jones Delaware News Desk Members of the League of Women Voters throughout Delaware are mourning the Dec. 17 death of state League President Carol Jones, of Rehoboth Beach.  Jones had a long history of commitment to the League of Women Voters of Sussex County and the League of Women Voters of Delaware. Sussex County residents are likely to recall Carol Jones’ legendary service as moderator for League programs, as well as for other community civic organizations. Over the years, she moderated innumerable candidate forums across the county as well as 14 Land Use Forums in Sussex County Council Chambers.

Beebe Healthcare cautions against COVID-19 vaccine scams Delaware News Desk Now that the COVID-19 vaccine is starting to be distributed, Beebe Healthcare is reporting increased concerns over scams and fraud related to the vaccine. Consumers should beware of any call, email or text asking consumers to pay money to secure their place in line to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. On Dec. 3, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued a fraud alert about reported scams surrounding the need to purchase a vaccine. The same day, a health system in Rhode Island reported community members were receiving direct phone calls, emails or texts from a supposed physician telling them to pay money to secure their spot in line for the vaccine. Upon investigation, the name of the physician being used in these scams was not even a practicing physician in the state.

TidalHealth Nanticoke earns ‘A’ grade for patient safety Delaware News Desk TidalHealth Nanticoke was awarded an “A” from The Leapfrog Group for the fall 2020 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade.  The designation recognizes TidalHealth Nanticoke’s efforts in protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care. This is the second consecutive reporting period that TidalHealth Nanticoke has been given the “A” grade, having received the same acknowledgement in the organization’s spring 2020 report.  The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. The Safety Grade assigns an “A” through “F” grade to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care.

Pedestrian killed while crossing Route 113 in Georgetown

A pedestrian died in a collision with a car on Route 113 in Georgetown on Wednesday evening. Delaware State Police Master Cpl. Heather Pepper said the collision happened at about 6:20 p.m., on Route 113 north, south of Bedford Street.  A 49-year-old Greenwood woman was driving a 2016 Ford Fusion north on Route 113 in the left lane, police said. At the same time, a 65-year-old Georgetown woman was attempting to cross Route 113 from an unknown direction in front of the Fusion. The driver was unable to avoid the pedestrian, and the front left bumper struck the pedestrian, according to police. The pedestrian was thrown into the grassy median west of the road.
