Los organizadores comunitarios de Long Beach revelaron sus demandas presupuestarias para abordar las necesidades de la comunidad el mes pasado, pero ahora dicen que la ciudad está inyectando más dinero en el Departamento de Policía de Long Beach, ya que muchos de los programas que propusieron no cuentan con financiamiento.
Los organizadores revelaron el Presupuesto del Publico en una conferencia de prensa el 22 de junio pidiendo a la ciudad que invierta en vivienda, el derecho a un abogado para los inquilinos, nuevas instalaciones para las personas mayores de la ciudad y más dinero para los servicios de traducción, entre otras demandas.

Organizers released the People’s Budget at a June 22 press conference calling on the city to invest in housing, a right to counsel for renters, new facilities for the city’s seniors and more money for translation services, among other demands.
To do that, a coalition of groups including Black Lives Matter Long Beach, Long Beach Forward, Long Beach Immigrant Rights Coalition and Long Beach Residents Empowered, said the city should reinvest funds from the LBPD and put them into community-serving programs.
“We are all calling for a defunding of the police and that’s the opposite of what happened in this budget,” said Audrena Redmond, an organizer with Black Lives Matter Long Beach.

The pandemic killed Anne Bergstedt’s jobs as a yoga instructor, DJ and radio show host, leaving her unemployed and awaiting those sectors to be reopened. Since then she’s burned through $27,000 in savings to keep up with her rent and bills. Last month, her father died just months after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

And now, she faces losing her home over a battle to keep her emotional support pig, Olive Garden, on the premises.
The 34-year-old Bergstedt has lived in her Hellman neighborhood home for about seven years, the last year and a half with a 6-year-old, 95-pound Vietnamese pot belly pig that she named after her [Olive’s] favorite restaurant.
