How much do you really know about the U.S. Census? December 23, 2020 Since 1790, the U.S. has conducted a census, an empirical measure of the country’s population. Mandated in the U.S. Constitution, its importance to our democracy is equal to that of elections, and both are affected by, and affect, the results of the census. In the last 230 years, of course, methodologies and technologies have changed and evolved. What hasn’t changed is the importance of the census and the data it delivers. Census data are used to determine congressional representation, identify vulnerable populations, and quantify our nation’s always-changing demographics.
