Letters to the editor: Weighing in on Dixie debate
Proposal from two local brothers
We brothers normally have lunched a couple of times each month at a local eatery. At those gatherings we discuss items of interest in our town. This past week we obviously got into an exchange of ideas about the current efforts to eliminate “Dixie” from the name of our university. The school has invested a sizable sum to a research firm to find out how the students, faculty, townfolk, and potential companies and agencies that hire our graduates feel about the term.
It appears that the research has confirmed what the college administration has heard of concerns. The term “Dixie” has a negative implication outside our area and the State of Utah as a whole. As we discussed this issue, it became clear to us that a major conflict is looming in our corner of the State. But those of us who have spent many years, even lifetimes for some, enjoying the comradery, friendliness, and neighborly
