Debate surrounding the ordinance stretched into Tuesday night and commissioners did not make their decision until about 8:45 p.m. The ordinance was introduced by McDaniel. I want to reiterate. This was not done in a vacuum,” McDaniel said before the ordinance was voted down. “There was an enormous amount of time put into this with the sheriff s lawyer.”
McDaniel and LoCastro both said that fear of unintended consequences from the ordinance should not have stopped commissioners from adopting it.
“I don t think any elected official can sit here and compromise their beliefs because of possible lawsuits,” LoCastro said.
The commissioners who voted against the ordinance voiced concerns of how and who would enforce it as well as possible unintended consequences attached to it.
Thereâs no doubt about it; this has been a tough year. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted our daily lives, and, for many, it has caused pain and suffering.
Goodfellows purchased clothing for 1,772 children this Christmas season, which was an increase of more than 600 children from 2019. The number reflects the economic damage the pandemic has caused our community. However, as they have in past tragedies, people in our community stepped to the plate and lent a hand â physically and monetarily.
In previous columns, Iâve listed and thanked organizations and volunteers who helped Goodfellows this year. I again thank them, and I also thank the Goodfellows Board of Directors: Kim Graves (president), Bill Gaunt (vice president), Gloria Spears (treasurer), John Wiles (secretary), Katie Auten, David Barnes, Tristan Clouthier, Susan Cone, Brian Elllis, Susan Harding, and Sherry Rahl.
