Amherst petitioners seek SJC relief in Jones Library case

Amherst petitioners seek SJC relief in Jones Library case Jones Library STAFF FILE PHOTO/KEN HEIDEL Published: 5/24/2021 8:56:13 PM AMHERST Residents trying to force a referendum on the expansion and renovation of the Jones Library, with borrowing for the project approved by the Town Council in April, are turning to the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts for relief. The lawsuit was filed against the Board of Registrars on Thursday by 40 registered voters, most of whom didn’t have their signatures counted toward a voter-veto petition that needed to get 864 signatures, or 5% of registered voters. Only 842 signatures were certified by the town clerk’s office.

Census could alter voting precincts in Amherst

Census could alter voting precincts in Amherst FILE PHOTO FILE PHOTO Published: 5/19/2021 12:10:23 PM AMHERST Every 10 years following the census, the voting precincts in Amherst change to make sure that each one has about the same number of inhabitants. For the first time under the Town Council form of government, a nine-member District Advisory Board is being established to begin the process of reviewing the census numbers provided to the town, and making recommendations for possible changes that could affect the polling locations where people vote. The council’s Governance, Organization and Legislative Committee is in the process of drafting the board’s charge and could soon make recommendations on appointments to the full council, if it deems a sufficient number of residents have expressed interest in serving on the board.
