nbc nightly news with lester holt good evening and thank you for joining us we start off tonight with yet another late winter punch of severe weather across the country as we begin this week including multiple tornadoes confirmed today in illinois at least a dozen reported from the plains to midwest since yesterday. but we are also watching snow moving east tonight, potentially bringing new york city its first significant snow of the season. right now there are winter alerts affecting an estimated 42 million people. from wisconsin clear to maine for many high winds will make things worse. and there s no break for storm-weary california rocked by more rain and snow today al roker will take us through it all in just a moment but first let s go to morgan chesky in oklahoma where they are picking up the pieces from tornadoes tonight. reporter: tonight oklahoma facing a mangled mess homes shredded and cars tossed. from terrifying tornadoes striking overnight. there s possi
in ten years be diagnosed with cancer that s from this reporter: these renewed fears come as truckloads of hazardous waste from the site are once again on the move after the epa temporarily paused shipments over the weekend they re now being transported from east palestine to epa-vetted disposal sites in nearby cities the addition of these disposal locations gets us closer to having enough capacity to finish the cleanup reporter: officials in michigan and texas irate over what they say was a surprise delivery of tons of contaminated waste from the derailment. the outward effect of it looks like we re being sandbagged reporter: ohio s governor announcing five truckloads of contaminated soil were returned to east palestine. as the ntsb continues its investigation, norfolk southern says it continues to work on track removal at the site as well as soil excavation. while the cdc continues door-to-door survey efforts to check on residents has anyone been to your door? not one p
so, we re learning today, that love is actually going to rebuild the area, they are going to tear this down today, and cleanup beginning this morning, and, that is what people are trying to focus on, here. in oklahoma. this morning. we spoke with the fire department, the police department, earlier. and they do say that some of the foggy weather has hindered some of those survey efforts and some of those efforts to find some victims, as well, unfortunately, where we stand here, in oklahoma county, we have two confirmed dead. although we are hearing as man as 5 were killed. and, just like these businesses, just like this one we re standing in right now, about half a dozen other businesses as well. dealing with this same sort of fate. so we do have the salvation army, the red cross, they are all on scene, as we try once again, to pick up the pieces here, in oklahoma. bill: liz, where are you relative to oklahoma city? because the east side of oklahoma city was hit hard, too. reporter: y
