Paraguayan health authorities last week confirmed at least 90 deaths this year had been caused by chikungunya fever, while Uruguay detected its first imported case of the malady. One more case was also confirmed in the last days of 2022, according to the latest report from Paraguay s Health Ministry released on Friday.
Paraguayan health authorities Wednesday said 14 people had died of Chikungunya while over 18,000 cases of the malady had been confirmed in the most recent outbreak which lead the Municipality of Asunción to declare an environmental emergency for 90 days as healthcare facilities were crammed.
Sanitary workers in the newly-created county of Fracrán in the Argentine province of Misiones have undertaken a house-by-house campaign to persuade people to get vaccinated against yellow fever, Covid-19, and measles, while residents were advised to up their precautions due to the increasing number of cases in neighboring Paraguay, where the first death due to chikungunya has been reported.
Sequera insisted people s awareness was vital
Paraguay s Health Ministry Friday admitted further restrictions are under consideration after a strict lockdown and other measures imposed during the Easter weekend failed to yield the desired results regarding a slowdown in the spread of the covid-19 disease.
The Ministry released an epidemiological update and warned that the Easter quarantine was not as successful as expected and therefore new measures were to be announced shortly.
Health Surveillance Director Guillermo Sequera explained that “the situation is really critical, all measures must be strengthened. We are aware that all the measures and guidelines that come out from the Ministry of Health will not have strength if they are not an accompanied by the people: The awareness of maintaining a well-ventilated environment, the use of a mask, maintaining a safe distance from people that they are not from the work nucleus or the family nucleus..
