GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. Imagine welcoming your newborn twins only to learn the law doesn t recognize you as their rightful parents. That s what a Grand Rapids couple is currently fighting.
Jordan and Tammy Myers spoke with 13 ON YOUR SIDE health reporter Val Lego about the 1954 law that is preventing them from gaining parental rights over their twins and forcing the Myers to instead, adopt their own children.
times are changing. nowhere is that more apparent than in the world of surrogacy parenting. the story of a gay couple and their female friend who had a baby for them. she carried the child and they are the legal parents, mind you, but can it really be that simple? here now is abc s juju chang. reporter: it s a modern day truth we see playing out on screen. we have been together five years now. we decided we really want to have a baby. reporter: having children for most gay couples typically means adopting. we adopted a baby. reporter: or paid surrogacy. $35,000 is a huge chunk of money. you have no problem doing this for two men. no i requested a gay couple. reporter: you don t hardly hear this. after years of hard work our best friend helped us to have a baby.
