JOHOR BARU: A 37-year-old businessman was acquitted of a drug possession charge after a High Court here ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove a prima facie case against him.
P. Kiran Kumar was acquitted on Monday (March 1) after the court ruled that the prosecution had failed to provide credible evidence on the charge against him as well as contradictory statements made by the witnesses.
According to the charge sheet, Kiran was in possession of 34.9gm of methamphetamine at a supermarket in Seri Alam at about 7.10pm on July 1,2018.
The act is an offence under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act and punishable under Section 39A(2) of the same Act, which carries a jail term of up to five years and 10 strokes of the cane.

Judicial Commissioner Dr Shahnaz Sulaiman handed down the sentence on M. Siva Sangker, 37, Thursday (Feb 4) after finding that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubts at the end of the defence case.
In the judgment, Dr Shahnaz said the argument by the defence that the accused was not at the murder scene, but was in Masai, when the murder took place, and his denial of having a motive to kill the victim because he and the victim were good friends, were mere denial and an afterthought .

JOHOR BARU, Jan 26 An alleged drug syndicate head, his girlfriend and three other men were charged at the Magistrate’s Court here today for drug-trafficking activities that saw the seizure of more than RM340 million in narcotics by the Johor police earlier this month.
The accused, Goh Chee Kuang, 44, Lee Chia Hui, 33, Lye Chang Pung, 39, Lye Chang Lim, 35, and Bally Paw Shaw Kiat, 38, face 18 charges together.
JOHOR BARU: Five individuals - including a pair of siblings - have been charged at the Magistrate s Court here with trafficking drugs amounting to more than RM340mil.
The accused, Goh Chee Kuang, 44, Lee Chia Hui, 33, Lye Chang Pung, 39, Lye Chang Lim, 35 and Bally Paw Shaw Kiat, 38, face 18 charges between them.
They were charged with trafficking various drugs including ketamine and methamphetamine between 102grams and 210kg.
All accused allegedly committed the offences at various locations including Taman Mount Austin, Taman Baiduri and Taman Setia Indah between Jan 9 and Jan 15.
The charges against them were read out in Mandarin in front of Magistrate Nurmardiana Mamat here on Tuesday (Jan 26).
