In demand producer/engineer Peter Wierenga wrestles with the state of humanity on his debut solo EP.

If music fans still take the time to read album credits, those locally will likely recognize the name Peter Wierenga. As a producer and engineer, as well as the drummer for power pop outfit Siberian Traps, Wierenga’s unique Frisian surname appears in small print on dozens of local records. Two weeks ago, however, his name (at least his first) appeared across the front of an album for the first time. Under the name Pete and the Crying Teeth, Wierenga has just released a new EP. Entitled

In 1968, back when Texas’ legendary psych-rock scene was emerging, a young folk musician by the name of Johndavid Bartlett signed a record deal with the Lone Star State’s premier psych-rock label, the Houston-based International Artists. Two labelmates, the 13th Floor Elevators and The Red Krayola, urged the high school student to hit the studio. With help from Krayola mastermind Mayo Thompson, Bartlett went into Golden Star Studio in his birthplace of Houston and began recording his debut album, but the label soon folded, leaving
