Use of Artificial Intelligence will transform judiciary but technology will not be allowed to decide cases: CJI | India News

NEW DELHI: As the Judiciary has decided to use Artificial Intelligence with the adoption of specially designed software to assist judges, the Chief Justice of India S A Bobde has said that the technology would never be allowed to take decisions which must be left to the judges. Releasing a report on Responsible AI of Indian Judicial System prepared by Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, the CJI said that he was strongly opposed to the automated decision making process in the judicial system and it should never be allowed. Terming use of Artificial Intelligence in Judiciary as a pivotal and transformative step, he said that AI should be used only to the extent to assist judges, lawyers and litigants in making judiciary efficient and accessible but how, when and what to decide would be left to the judges.

For almost a decade now, the Supreme Court has been mulling the idea of E-courts. A draft proposal for the third phase of the E-courts project was released by the SC’s E-Committee earlier this week. 7 hours ago The Supreme Court has launched an artificial intelligence-enabled portal that would help its judges in legal research. The SUPACE short for Supreme Court Portal for Assistance in Courts Efficiency was inaugurated by Chief Justice SA Bobde on Tuesday. The event was inaugurated virtually, with judges from several high courts in attendance. Justice L Nageswara Rao, chair of the Supreme Court’s Artificial Intelligence Committee, said that while AI was unlikely to ever make human lawyers or judges redundant, it still has the potential to be a “tremendous asset” in the justice system. He said the system would assist judges, court staff and litigants in addressing bottlenecks in the judicial system and mitigate delays. He added that AI could be used in the areas of language translation, automation of administrative tasks and legal research. “We have already been successful in our attempt to translate documents and judgement into 11 languages,” he said.
