A NEWLY formed opposition coalition that fielded its 2022 presidential and vice presidential bets at the weekend may not be strong enough to defeat administration candidates especially after some of its nominees declined to become part of the group, political analysts said.
“It only confirms what we have known for quite a long time that 1Sambayan is quite a weak opposition coalition,” said Cleve Kevin Robert V. Arguelles, a lecturer at De La Salle University’s Political Science department.
Shortly after the coalition’s announcement, Senator Grace Poe-Llamanzares and Batangas Rep. Vilma Santos-Recto turned down their nominations.

THE PHILIPPINES on Tuesday rejected China’s fishing ban in parts of the South China Sea and asked it to stop violating the Southeast Asian nation’s sovereignty.
In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said China’s three-month fishing moratorium that started on May 1 covers areas over which the Philippines controls.
“These waters include areas over which the Philippines exercises sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction,” the agency said.
“The Philippines strongly urges China to desist from any action and activity that infringes on Philippine sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction, in contravention of international law,” it added.

THE PHILIPPINES’ top envoy on Thursday ordered his agency to file another diplomatic protest against China for the continued presence of almost 300 ships in the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.
“Fire a diplomatic protest,” Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin, Jr. tweeted.
He also criticized a Philippine Task for failing to alert the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) before issuing a statement on the Chinese ships.
Hundreds of Chinese militia vessels were still scattered around the Spratlys, both within and outside Manila’s exclusive economic zone, the task force said on Tuesday night.

THE PHILIPPINES did not lose new territories to China during the term of President Rodrigo R. Duterte, pursuant to an agreement between the two to keep the status quo, according to the presidential palace.
China did not reclaim islands, reefs and other sea features under Mr. Duterteâs leadership, his spokesperson Herminio L. Roque, Jr. told a televised news briefing on Tuesday.
The Philippines did lose Scarborough Shoal to China under his predecessor Benigno S.C. Aquino III, he added.
âWhatâs important is the deal between the President and President Xi for a status quo did not change,â Mr. Roque said in Filipino. âThere were no new reclamations and they did not get new territories and we didnât lose any.â
