(From Supreme Court) May 27, 2021 (UPDATED) Voting 37-0 with zero abstentions among those present virtually, the House of Representatives committee on justice on Thursday, May 27, 2021, dismissed outright the impeachment complaint against Supreme Court Associate Justice Mario Victor Leonen, after determining that it is based on hearsay and is not based on authentic records.
“What we have, in sum, is an ‘unsigned’ impeachment complaint that is provided for in Section 3, third paragraph, due to the failure of the complainant to verify his allegations as true and correct based on his personal knowledge, or authentic records,” committee chairman Leyte 3rd District Vicente S.F. Veloso said.
Romualdez to refer Leonen impeachment complaint to House Justice Committee By CONSUELO MARQUEZ, GMA News
Published May 16, 2021 3:51pm House Majority Leader and Leyte 1st District Representative Martin Romualdez on Sunday said he will refer the impeachment complaint against Supreme Court Associate Justice Mario Victor Leonen to the House Committee on Justice within three session days. Romualdez said the House Committee on Rules, which he chairs, will discuss the referral of the impeachment complaint against Leonen, who previously said Congress should not spend its time attending to false issues. “Last March 25, Speaker Lord Allan Jay Velasco transmitted the impeachment complaint filed by Mr. Edwin M. Cordevilla and endorsed by Ilocos Sur 2nd District Rep. Angelo Marcos Barba to our committee. We will act on it and include it in the order of business,” Romualdez said in a statement.
IN my column of September 7, I wrote:
âSupreme Court Associate Justice Mario Victor Leonen may be even a worse offender of the Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) Law than the ousted chief justice Maria Lourdes Sereno. That law (called the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees) requires all state officials and employees to file their yearly SALNs.
âSereno was removed from her post in 2018 for having failed to file such reports for six years, an offense for which her colleagues decided that she had no integrity and, therefore, could not have been appointed as chief justice.
