When it comes to applying for Medicare, what you have to do will depend on your individual situation. Suppose you already receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits (or will get them at least 4 months before you turn 65). In that case, you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B when you become eligible. Your Medicare coverage will be effective the first of the month in which you turn 65, or if your birthday is on the first day of the month, your Medicare coverage will be effective the first day of the prior month. Suppose you retire at 65 and are not already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits. In that case, you will have to sign up for Parts A and B during your 7-month Initial Enrollment Period. How do you signup for Medicare if you need to enroll yourself?
