With Marc Anthony’s “Vivir Mi Vida” playing buoyantly in the background, Claudia Rossi announced Sunday she will be running for Santa Clara County supervisor.
“This is going to be a long fight,” Rossi said. “We have a long journey and we have very well funded opponents that want that seat.”
Rossi, a practicing nurse who serves as president of the Santa Clara County Board of Education, is running for the District 1 seat held by Supervisor Mike Wasserman, who terms out in 2022. She’s up against former San Jose Councilmember Johnny Khamis, who termed out in December and announced he’s running for the county supervisor.

Calling it dangerous work worthy of hazard pay during the pandemic, Santa Clara County s Board of Supervisors is looking to impose a temporary $5-per-hour wage increase for grocery and drugstore workers.
Already in place in San Francisco and Oakland, the so-called hero pay ordinance in Santa Clara County would compel large chains to pay its essential, front-line workers higher wages for 180 days. Grocery stores, drugstores, fast food restaurants and large retailers that also sell groceries would be included.
Retail workers, including grocery store employees, are five times more likely to test positive for COVID-19, according to a study published in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
“Hazard pay is necessary to justly compensate retail food workers for the clear and present dangers of doing their jobs during the pandemic, ensure the welfare of workers, and continue stable operation of our much-needed food supply chain, Jimenez added.
The extra pay would only apply to food suppliers that have 300 or more employees nationwide.
Small corner stores, mom and pop shops and smaller ethnic supermarkets wouldn t be subject to the ordinance because they have already been disproportionally hit by COVID-19, Jimenez said.
Levi s Stadium in Santa Clara is being eyed as a potential COVID-19 vaccination center after the San Francisco 49ers offered up their facility citing adequate space and technology for storage, as well as security.
He said changing guidelines at state and federal levels could be a potential barrier, as well as incomplete vaccination data from local entities in the county and future vaccine availability.
County supervisors unanimously voted to send a letter to the state asking for more vaccines and County Executive Jeff Smith said health officials put in a request in the last week for 100,000 more doses. The county has since received an additional 6,000, Smith said.
