Guest Essay/Joe Nacca: The art of the spiel

Imagine that you are visiting the various merchants in Canandaigua: restaurants, retail, services, et al. In most of the establishments, you are likely to find the owner of the business on premise. Out of love, necessity or both, Canandaigua merchants work their businesses. After exchanging a few pleasantries, you ask this question: “Why do you employ people?” With a quizzical look, the merchant responds, “Well, I need people to make the operation go.” You thank the proprietor and congratulate yourself on having made an amazing discovery: in order for a business to succeed, it generally requires employees. Keep that almost biblical revelation in mind.
