WADDINGTON Waddington Town Supervisor Alex V. Hammond has been promoted to the rank of Captain in the New York Army National Guard and has been activated to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hammond ran for the New York Assembly District 116 in 2020, challenging the Republican incumbent Mark Walczyk. Last spring, when the pandemic broke out, both Assemblyman Walczyk and Supervisor Hammond were called to active duty. Walczyk served just over a month while Hammond served just over three months.
This second activation for Supervisor Hammond comes in the wake of uncertain times in the country. Just a week ago, the US Capitol building was stormed by protesters prompting the New York Army National Guard to send 1,000 troops to Washington D.C.
