Information from the past two weeks regarding recreational opportunities in the town and village of Potsdam brought both cheers and jeers.
The good news is that the beach at Postwood Park in Hannawa Falls will open this season. The Town Board announced June 23 that it will assume âfull financial and operational responsibilityâ of the beach. This resolved a concern that the beach would not open this year.
Trey T. Smutz, director of recreation for the village of Potsdam, told members of the Potsdam Village Board of Trustees on June 21 that Postwood Beach was unsafe and under-staffed. He said the joint town/village recreation commission didnât have the necessary resources to clean the area and operate it; the beach is littered with glass and debris. On June 11, members of the Town Board received a letter from Smutz stating the beach would remain closed.

Funding for the study was offered from the Virginia Department of Transportation last summer, but the county has decided not to move forward with it now due to staff capacity and overall capital project funding constraints.

POTSDAM â The Town Council tabled a resolution Tuesday night that would have granted St. Lawrence County a permanent easement on part of the land where the town garage is located.
The county Highway Department currently uses space on the land to store vehicles and salt and sand but wants to build two structures to shelter its equipment and materials.
According to county Highway Superintendent Donald R. Chambers, who attended the meeting, in order to secure funding for the project the county needs to have âan ownership interest over the land,â which could be in the form of a permanent easement.
