(CNSNews.com) - Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Tae Johnson told the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security on Thursday that except for a limited number who are put in an “Alternatives to Detention” (ATD) program his agency cannot track illegal aliens who are caught and then released into the United States.
Johnson made this concession in an exchange with Rep. Ashley Hinson (R.-Iowa).
Immigration attorneys, civil rights groups hopeful about Harris Co. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez nomination to lead ICE
Gonzalez nomination to head ICE met with excitement, caution
FOX 26 Reporter Maria Salazar has more reaction as President Biden will nominate Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez to head ICE.
Ruby Powers, an immigration attorney in Houston and spokesperson for the American Immigration Lawyers Association, was in a staff meeting when she heard the news of his nomination. She says it took a while for the news to sink in but describes it as good news. I think that Sheriff Gonzalez is the right choice. I ll be sad to see him go from Houston as he s been a pillar in our community, but I think he ll serve us all well in this role and this is a good role for him, Powers told FOX 26.

The Biden administration plans to expand the number of migrants released into the United States after being detained at the southern border. Unable to keep up with the historically high number of asylum-seekers flooding the border, changes will be made to allow more families and women with children to simply be released from custody. It sounds a lot like the catch and release methods used by the Obama-Biden administration.
The surge of migrants illegally entering the United States at the southern border is causing DHS to scramble in order to find places to house them. Instead of reinstating the Remain-in-Mexico agreement the former administration had with Mexico, the Biden administration is looking into some major changes to the Alternatives to Detention (ATD) program. ATD began in 2004 through ICE’s Intensive Supervision Appearance Program (ISAP). It is not a substitute for detention but it allows ICE to supervise illegal immigrants who are not detained. T
