Social cohesion summit for Durban following attacks on foreigners

Durban - MAYOR Mxolisi Kaunda has instructed eThekwini Municipality officials to fast track preparations for a social cohesion summit in the metro following recent incidents where foreign street traders in the CBD were attacked.
Mayoral spokesperson Mluleki Mntungwa said the city’s activities to promote social cohesion were still ongoing.
“We condemn these acts of criminality that took place. The mayor convened a meeting with law enforcement agencies a week ago to deal with issues. People are constantly being attacked in their place of business in the CBD as well as the invasion of construction sites, a task team was set up by law enforcement agencies to deal decisively with these criminal elements,” said Mntungwa.

JOHANNESBURG, March 9 (Xinhua) The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) on Monday condemned the recent attacks directed at foreign nationals in the city centre of Durban.
The condemnation came after shops owned by migrants were attacked allegedly by members of the uMkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA), a military wing of the ruling African National Congress. The SAHRC is deeply concerned by the recent attacks on non-nationals, which commenced on Sunday . at the Soldiers Way Market trading precinct/area in the Durban CBD that left several non-nationals including women injured and traumatised, the commission said in a statement.
The attacks were allegedly perpetrated by young MKMVA members, according to metro police.
While the CBD has calmed down, police have reported injuries following the violent clashes.
Foreign-owned shops were attacked in the Durban CBD on Monday, allegedly by MKMVA members, Durban police have said. It is confirmed xenophobic attacks. It emanates from young MKMVA members vandalising and assaulting foreign shop owners, metro police spokesperson Superintendent Zama Dlamini said.
She said some shop owners had been injured during the attacks. They [MKMVA] allegedly attacked them and there was retaliation which resulted in some injuries, but the police managed to stabilise the situation. The fire department was also there because some of the shops were petrol bombed.
