The Broward School Board green lights a 740-thousand-dollar separation agreement with embattled Superintendent Robert Runcie. Runcie is resigning with a 90-day notice period beginning today, so he will continue on as an employee until August 10th, 2021. District Attorney Walter Harvey says Runcie will not serve in the Superintendent position, but he will be on hand to help transition his replacement. The money covers 20 weeks severance, sick-vacation-medical and pension payments along with his legal fees. Runcie has pleaded not guilty to a felony perjury charge stemming from the grand jury investigation of the Parkland massacre.
About Florida News
It is certainly a generous agreement in terms of separation for the superintendent, Leonardi said.
School board member Debbi Hixon, whose husband, athletic director Chris Hixon, was killed in the 2018 Parkland school shooting, said supporters seemed to be “skirting around” the fact Runcie is leaving voluntarily rather than accept a suspension until his criminal case is resolved.. To me, there was no middle ground there, we gave him everything he was asking for, said Hixon.
The severance is about $300,000 less than Runcie could have received. Depending on how his contract is interpreted, the Board could’ve been on the hook to contribute about $400,000 to Runcie’s retirement fund. Instead, Runcie’s side compromised and agreed to the minimum amount of $80,000.

As aging teachers retire and with changes to enrollment in education programs, schools in New York state are in need of teachers.
According to statistics from New York State United Teachers there were more than 51,000 teachers in 2018 over the age of 55 and almost 36,000 aged 51-54 enrolled in the New York State Teachers’ Retirement System. That means that of the 264,590 members of the NYSTRS, approximately one-third are able or will soon be able to retire.
