Discussions about school resource officers and their role in the Worcester Public Schools are ongoing as city students return to classrooms for the first time in a year, Superintendent Maureen Binienda said Wednesday.
Earlier this month, the Worcester City Council voted narrowly to remove school resource officers from schools by the end of the 2021 calendar year. The measure was among various items brought before the council by City Manager Edward Augustus Jr. to address racism and police reform.
Binienda told MassLive that she is setting up a meeting with the city manager, Police Chief Steven Sargent and Mayor Joseph Petty, who is also the chair of the school committee, to solidify plans involving school resource officers, also called SROs.

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) The rift between Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker and the state’s teachers unions deepened Thursday as the Republican bristled at calls to take additional steps to vaccinate educators before ending virtual education in favor of in-classroom learning.
On Wednesday, the administration announced that it was designating four days when the state’s seven mass vaccination sites will offer first doses only to K-12 teachers, childcare workers and K-12 school staff.
The special vaccination days are March 27, April 3, April 10 and April 11.
The state also announced that beginning this week, teachers are eligible to receive vaccination shots under state guidelines.

Worcester educators rally at city hall, calling on district to negotiate contract and vaccinate staff

The chant at Worcester City Hall was loud and consistent: “Negotiate. Vaccinate. Educate.”
Dozens of members of the Educational Association of Worcester rallied Thursday afternoon, saying they wanted to bring the negotiating table to city hall after working through the COVID-19 pandemic for months with expired contracts.
More than just wanting a fair contract, the educators were calling on officials for vaccinations. Though Gov. Charlie Baker announced Wednesday that K-12 employees, early childcare workers and school staff will be eligible for vaccine appointments on March 11, there will be competition to get in line for a shot because of a limited vaccine supply. It means that many Worcester teachers and school staff will have to head back into classrooms for hybrid learning without inoculation.
