MDIRSS curriculum director leaves next month - Mount Desert Islander

MDIRSS curriculum director leaves next month BAR HARBOR  Julie Meltzer, director of curriculum, assessment and instruction for the Mount Desert Island Regional School System since 2013, will be leaving that post June 25.  “It’s been a really productive and great eight years,” she said. “Now it’s time for somebody else to put their energy and talents into the role.”  Meltzer said she had thought about leaving a year ago, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, she decided she should stay.  “Now, I’m going to take the summer off for the first time in probably 30 years,” she said. “I plan to take about six months to figure out which of many wonderful opportunities to go forward with.”

Public hearing in Trenton draws quiet crowd - Mount Desert Islander

Public hearing in Trenton draws quiet crowd TRENTON   Only one comment was made at the town’s public hearing Tuesday night, which was over in a matter of minutes.   Open to the public via Zoom videoconferencing, the hearing drew in several virtual participants and was held to discuss three referendum articles slated for the town’s warrant, one of which being whether Trenton should declare itself a Second Amendment sanctuary town.  Municipalities around the country have declared themselves “sanctuaries” as a way for local governments to oppose potential gun control measures that some see as unconstitutional.  In part, the proposed resolution states, “The Town of Trenton wishes to further express opposition to any law that would unconstitutionally restrict the rights of our citizens to peacefully keep and bear arms.”

Pre-K on hold for another year - Mount Desert Islander

Pre-K on hold for another year MOUNT DESERT COVID-19 caused Mount Desert Elementary School and Mount Desert Nursery School to shelve plans to start a joint pre-kindergarten program this past fall, and uncertainty over the ongoing impact of the pandemic has put those plans on hold for another year. The plans called for the nursery school to host the pre-K program. “There are still too many unknowns going into the rest of this school year and this summer and next school year,” said Aaron Long, executive director of the nursery school. “I think neither party is ready to move forward until we get a better handle on some of those things.”
