The Payson school board this week unanimously dropped a requirement that students and staff wear masks on campus.
The decision follows Gov. Doug Duceyâs decision to repeal a statewide school mask mandate. The governorâs latest order leaves the decision up to school boards. The state has now lifted virtually all pandemic restrictions.
Paysonâs decision runs counter to the recommendation from the federal Centers for Disease Control, which recommends mask-wearing on campus â especially during group activities like sporting events and assemblies. The CDC also recommends regular testing to identify new cases on campus, but the district has no plans to start screening tests.
Payson schools made a backup plan inside its backup plan this week, moving uncertainly toward a post-pandemic world of online learning.
The school board authorized hiring two more teachers and buying additional online curriculum, despite the layers of uncertainty that persists.
The $94,000 investment might pay off â depending on how many kids sign up for distance learning classes next fall â when the mass vaccination campaign might â or might not â have tamed the pandemic and when children might â or might not â also finally have a safe and effective vaccine against COVID-19.
On the other hand, the expanded online program could also turn into a money pit â if all the kids flock back to class.
The Payson school board this week adopted an optimistic preliminary budget plan, with lots of problems in the fine print.
A flush of federal funding has provided something of a financial high in the face of big enrollment declines and worrisome state funding formulas.
Kind of like giving pain killers to a cancer patient.
Still, the board members made the best of an uncertain situation â with promised federal funding for the moment preventing the widespread cuts that enrollment declines and extra costs related to the pandemic might otherwise require.
The district has suffered a roughly 15% enrollment decline since the onset of the pandemic â roughly 300 students. The drop wiped away years of slow enrollment growth. In addition, about 15% of students have opted to remain full time in distance learning mode, which also costs the district funding.
